Enduring Craft: The Story of Made by Morgen and Their Collaboration with R.M.Williams
Founded by Nick McDonald, Made by Morgen is a Melbourne-based furniture studio defined by a commitment to craftsmanship, simplicity and sustainability. Drawing from mid-century Scandinavian influences and a distinctly Australian sensibility, the studio produces timeless timber furniture that reflects a deep respect for materiality and the design process. With every piece made to order in their Brunswick workshop, Made by Morgen brings a sense of quiet integrity to contemporary interiors.
At the heart of the brand’s ethos is a considered approach to making, one that favours FSC-certified timbers, hand-finishing and a slower, more intentional pace. It’s a practice grounded in longevity and authenticity, values that align strongly with Loam’s own curated collection of Australian and international design. Much like Loam, Made by Morgen prioritises pieces that are not just beautiful, but built to last.
This philosophy is echoed in their recent partnership with iconic heritage brand R.M.Williams. Commissioned to design and produce a custom furniture collection for the brand’s flagship store at 345 George Street in Sydney. The result is a collection of bespoke furniture pieces – from timber display cabinetry to seating and shelving – that reflects the values of both brands: craftsmanship, quality and enduring appeal.
The collaboration spans multiple flagship locations, including Claremont and St Georges Terrace in Perth, to Rundle Mall in Adelaide, with pieces featuring Hydrowood Leatherwood, a rare reclaimed Tasmanian timber sourced from the depths of Lake Pieman. Upholstery is crafted from R.M.Williams’ signature boot leather, further enhancing the tactile narrative and connection to place. Each piece is made by hand, a deliberate counterpoint to mass production and an embodiment of the slow design ethos shared by both brands.
For Made by Morgen, the collaboration represents more than a creative alignment, it’s a meeting of two brands that champion Australian design and share a respect for material integrity and local making. For the design community, it marks a shift in how traditional retail spaces are evolving, becoming ever more immersive, intentional and architecturally grounded.
Loam proudly supports makers like Made by Morgen, whose approach resonates with our own belief in meaningful, well-crafted design. Their work stands as a reminder that contemporary Australian design is not only thriving but redefining global standards for sustainability and substance
